Forty-five kilometers north of Nyeri town and 245 kilometers from Nairobi . Established in 1949. Mt Kenya is the second highest and snow capped mountain in Africa . The highest peak, Batian is 5199 metres (17,058 feet), Nelion 17,022 feet and point Lenana 4,985 metres (16,355 feet).
All the area above 3,200 metre (10,500) contour line is preserved as a national park. It offers the greatest mountain climbing adventure in Africa with Batian being the toughest peak to conquer. Other attractions include mountain moorland walking, beautiful valley sceneries covered with ice and glaciers and track fishing.
Fauna: herds of elephant, black rhino, buffalo, melanistic leopard and serval cats. The most rare and elusive antelope - Bongo.
Flora: Giant forest lobelia, seneccio (whose mass flowering occurs once every 20 or more years) and giant groundsels.
