MERU NATIONAL PARK (870 SQ. KMS.)

Eighty-five kilometres east of Meru town and 370 kilometres north east of Nairobi . The Embu-Meru route is 320 kms. Established as a County Council Game Reserve in 1957, later becoming a National Park in 1966. It embraces a unique river line and savanna environment inhabited by a great variety of mammals, birds and reptiles. Its broad grassland plains dotted with acacia trees are bisected by permanent rivers which eventually converge into Kenya 's mightiest river, the Tana.

The big five, elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino and leopard dominate the scene. Rare antelopes such as oryx, lesser kudu and gerenuk are plentiful. Herds of reticulated giraffe and Grevy zebra are also seen. It is the only park in Kenya where white rhino is found having been re-introduced there in 1966 after centuries of extinction.

It is one; of the best parks to see cheetah and lion. Part of a domain made famous by ELSA, the lioness reared by the late world famous Joy
Adamson and later rehabilitated into the wild. The many permanent rivers form a haven for hippos, crocodiles and thousands of birds. Boat safaris along Tana River are organized. Adarnson Falls in Tana River add to the beauty of this virgin wilderness.

From Meru National Park visitors move northwards to Samburu/Isiolo National Reserves.
